Chapter 19

“What is your experience with private security?” Dash listened as Alexander Pompov continued with the standard list of questions he dealt with in nearly every private security interview.

“After the Second Galaxy Wars, I was discharged from my commission with the League Navy. Throughout my time I earned many distinctions and medals. Because of that service, I was given a decommissioned military vessel. Since then I’ve traveled the galaxy and taken on many private security jobs, in addition to the League work I still perform when I can get it.” Dash’s answers were rote at this point, but Dash preferred not to be given this job anyways.

“What was your most recent private security job?” Pompov continued. Alexander Pompov was the head of security for the Society Association and Historical Archives on the Tera 4 Space Colony. Dash had been interviewing in his office for the last fifteen minutes for a temporary position within the organization. The position was exactly in line with the kind of work Dash had done since the war. He would work hand in hand with Pompov for security updates for the Society Association and to ensure compliance with various League security standards.

“About a year ago I took a job for a small Timion mining company on an asteroid near their home planet. The Timions wanted to make sure their new security protocols were up to League standards. They had purchased new technology from the League military tech engine shortly after the war and were trying to integrate that technology with their own. I worked with their head of security to oversee that integration and to work with them on better understanding the protocols and how the integration of the technology could benefit their company security.” Dash thought back to his time working with those Timions. It had been his first real exposure to Timions outside of the Descendants of Prontoth. He had used that time to better understand their behavior and how the everyday Timion lived. It was a rare job where there was not some ancillary mission he was also completing for the Descendants of Prontoth.

“You worked for a Timion company? That must have been quite the experience. Are they as vicious in person as the newsfeeds indicate?” Dash could see Pompov had an earnest interest in the topic.

“I think you have to separate their ruthlessness in battle from how a Timion may act in an everyday setting. I can tell you the company was run in a very organized, top-down manner. One of the biggest challenges I had was we had to report even the most nuanced procedures we were using to Timion government authorities and repeatedly make sure we had their approval for implementation. I had to be fairly deferential in my dealings with government officials, despite my rank from the war. However, the security team I worked with treated me as an equal, and those who worked under us treated me with deference.”

“Fascinating,” responded Pompov.

Dash heard Shira in his ear, “Don’t impress him too much.
